The Project of Riverbank Intake Hyporheic Flow from Upstream in Gaoping Weir, Taiwan

◎ Description:

Gaoping River is the largest river in Taiwan. The watershed area up to 3,275 km2, and annual average sediment discharge is 35.61 million tons (10, 934 tons per km2 ).
Gaoping Weir supply nearly over 70% of the daily water for Kaohsiung City. However, river water turns turbid and muddy after raining every time, despite the weir can be used. Taiwan rainy season mainly from May to October that about 70% annual rainfall. Therefore, hyporheic flow plays a key role to relive water shortage during dry season (November to April).
The project has been started up since 2014, which 12 units of 60HP AF Series Submersible Sewage / Wastewater Pumps have installed in radial well (water collecting well) along Gaoping River. Installed large radiant tube under riverbed and obtain hyporheic flow (water flowing in the sands and gravels underground that act as natural filter). Hyporheic flow provide better river eco-system that also cost less compared to reservoir or weir.
At current water shortage situation, Taiwan Water Resources Agency has completed【Expanding facilities for supply 100,000 tons of hyporheic flow daily】infrastructure project to increase water resource as back up when water in high turbidity and dry spell in Kaohsiung. It also alleviates the urgent need as Taiwan suffering the worst drought in 57 years.
